Colour Coding is an accepted system for reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

This system is to be applied to all mops, buckets, handles and cleaning cloths used for cleaning purposes.

Health facilities are to progressively implement the following colour coding standards:

BLUE      - General Cleaning
GREEN   - Kitchen & Food Preparation Areas

YELLOW - Infection control
RED         - Toilet & Bathrooms
 

Summary: All cleaning equipment is to be colour coded so that use of equipment is limited to specific areas of hospitals to reduce risk of infection.

The Department of Health in conjunction with various associations and representatives from the health system, has been developing “Cleaning Standards for Health Facilities”. As part of the development of the Cleaning Standards a standard has been introduced for the colour coding of cleaning equipment in all health facilities. For the purposes of infection and bacterial control the identification of cleaning equipment utilised in the different areas of a health facility is considered essential. Clear identification, by colour coding, of the various items of cleaning equipment is considered the most effective method of restricting equipment to individual areas of health facilities.
